A university student posted messages on Twitter threatening to carry out a mass casualty attack on his school. The messages included statements saying, “the campus going to get shot up and who will be to blame.” Another statement read, “You (expletive) are past spent, you (expletive) are going to die in class.”

A college student sent a text to a fellow student threatening to shoot students at their university. In a text to a second student, the subject said he was going to “commit a shooting that people would be talking about.” The second student forwarded the text to a university professor who notified law enforcement.

An international student who had recently sought psychiatric care for suicidal thoughts and feeling like he might lose control and commit acts of violence against anyone tried to buy an AR-15 from a local gun store. The owner refused to sell the weapon based on erratic statements being made by the student about his intended use of the weapon and his unfamiliarity with its operation.

The suspect had moved away from his home state to live in a treatment center for troubled teens. Upon returning home from the center, he messaged a friend from the treatment center saying that he was plotting a school shooting. He had recently purchased a shotgun and multiple boxes of ammunition.

The Averted School Violence Reporting System for law enforcement officers, school officials, and mental health professionals was modeled after the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) near miss reporting system. Initiated by the National Policing Institute in 2015, the database is now operated by Safe and Sound Schools. In 2013 the transfer, improvement in functionality and expansion of the Averted School Violence Database was made possible through Prevent 2 Protect, a Michigan Department of Education Pilot Project. Continued funding to maintain and expand the project is provided by the Motorola Solutions Foundation. The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) and Safe and Sound Schools’ national community of school safety practitioners support the important work of the project.
Founded by parents who lost children at Sandy Hook School, Safe and Sound is a national non-profit school safety advocacy and resource center that provides research based tools and support for crisis prevention, response, and recovery, helping to protect every school, every student, every day.
