In December 2015, a husband and wife used illegally acquired assault rifles among other weapons to murder 14 innocent people and wound 21 more at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California. Prior to the attack, the wife had pledged allegiance to ISIS.

The Averted School Violence Reporting System for law enforcement officers, school officials, and mental health professionals was modeled after the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) near miss reporting system. Initiated by the National Policing Institute in 2015, the database is now operated by Safe and Sound Schools and maintained through funding from Michigan State University’s Prevent 2 Protect and the Motorola Solutions Foundation.
Founded by parents who lost children at Sandy Hook School, Safe and Sound is a national non-profit school safety advocacy and resource center that provides research based tools and support for crisis prevention, response, and recovery, helping to protect every school, every student, every day.
