A student at a large public university had not enrolled for spring semester and the university was in the process of removing him from his dorm room. Given that the student had recently lost a portion of his employment income and appeared to have nowhere to move, the university was taking an empathetic approach to the removal process instead of abruptly forcing him out.

The Averted School Violence Reporting System for law enforcement officers, school officials, and mental health professionals was modeled after the International Association of Fire Chief’s (IAFC) near miss reporting system. Initiated by the National Policing Institute in 2015, the database is now operated by Safe and Sound Schools and maintained through funding from Michigan State University’s Prevent 2 Protect and the Motorola Solutions Foundation.
Founded by parents who lost children at Sandy Hook School, Safe and Sound is a national non-profit school safety advocacy and resource center that provides research based tools and support for crisis prevention, response, and recovery, helping to protect every school, every student, every day.
